The QLM Label Makers Marketing team were privileged to be engaged to provide the design services for the Australian Consulate General – Ho Chi Minh City – AUSTRALIA – stand at the 2023 Nguyen Hue Spring Flower Street Festival, being held from 19-26 January 2023. The theme for the Nguyen Hue Spring Flower Street follows the zodiac of the Lunar New Year, with 2023 being the Year of the Cat in Vietnam (whilst it is the Year of the Rabbit for other countries*).
Nguyen Hue Spring Flower Street is a pedestrian area in the centre of Ho Chi Minh City and it is decorated with a dazzling display of flowers, plants and many references to the Year of the Cat. Visited by hundreds of thousands of visitors during the festival, the history of the event is to pay tribute to the previous flower market that was once located there on a canal (before it was filled to become a street).
The live flowers and plants used on the AUSTRALIA stand represent a big hug, inviting you in to an interactive space where you can take photos with beautiful and iconic images of Australia. Popular local ‘Tet’ plants include a blanket of Cúc mâm xôi (garden mums) and Mào gà lửa hồng (Scarlet plumosa) that are used to represent the beach and ‘flags’ of the Australian lifeguards that protect our beaches. These are presented in front of a variety of Heliconias that are symbolic of plants found in our lush tropical rainforests.

The logo on the AUSTRALIA VIETNAM stand celebrates the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Australia and Vietnam, whilst embracing the celebration that is Tet (Lunar New Year). The iconic Australian Koala, whose name is derived from Dharug (an indigenous Australian language) meaning “no drink”, is symbolic of the important relationship between plants, climate and survival. The Koala sits in front of one of our iconic Australian Beaches.
Gấu túi Koala là sinh vật biểu tượng của Australia, tên gọi của nó bắt nguồn từ Dharug (một ngôn ngữ bản địa Australia) có nghĩa là “không uống”, tượng trưng cho mối liên kết chặt chẽ giữa thực vật và khí hậu đối với sự sống. Chú gấu Koala ngồi trước bãi biển Australia là hình ảnh mang tính biểu tượng của chúng tôi.
The dot patterns on the design are created by Australian Indigenous Artist: Tony Wilson, and symbolise Vietnam in the North and Australia in the South. Tony’s work is heavily influenced by his cultural heritage, interactions with people and their environments.

The Koala wears Native Australian flowers Blue leschenaultia and also holds a small bunch of Wattle. Wattle is the floral emblem of Australia and represents the national colours of green and gold. Wattle blooms in Spring and is widely used in Aboriginal culture for food, medicine and to make tools.
Chú gấu Koala đội vòng hoa leschenaultia xanh tím của người Australia bản địa trên đầu và cầm trên tay bó hoa keo vàng. Hoa keo vàng (hay mimosa Đà Lạt) cũng là loài hoa biểu tượng với màu xanh và vàng đặc trưng của Australia. Cây keo nở hoa vào mùa xuân và được sử dụng rộng rãi trong nền văn hóa thổ dân để làm thực phẩm, thuốc men và chế tạo công cụ.
Lucky Money Envelopes (‘li xi’- Southern, ‘tien mung tuoi’ – Northern) are the traditional custom given during Lunar New Year holidays to create great memories and bring good fortune to the upcoming year.
Phong Lì xì (‘lì xì’- Miền Nam, ‘tiền mừng tuổi’ – Miền Bắc) là phong tục truyền thống được trao trong những ngày Tết Nguyên Đán thay cho những lời chúc tốt lành và may mắn cho năm mới.

*The cat is the 4th animal of the zodiac for the Lunar New Year. It is suggested by some that the use of an Ancient Chinese word pronounced “Mao” to describe rabbits (at the time) sounded very similar to the Vietnamese word for cat: “Meo” which means cat, and that is why Vietnam adopted the cat instead of the rabbit. Whatever the reason, Vietnam uses the cat to symbolise sensual and delicate personalities, combined with beauty and harmony. Cats also have a playful, strong and sneaky personality and many designs around Vietnam use this for both fun and stylish aesthetics.
